“Does anyone have any questions” by Julia on the toilet

5 minutes
overheard at BC Children’s Hospital

I shoot my hand up into the air slicing though immediate sky and most expectations
WILL THERE BE A TEST ON THIS OR WHAT?
The whole room is looking at me
like they did not plan or hope for this
as if they didn’t know the test would be so brazen and surprising and at the wrong time of the day
as if they wished they had prepared for being tested on someone testing their patience and their ethics
I laugh because I don’t know, isn’t this whole thing a sham?
WE ARE PAYING SOMEBODY ELSE TO DISAPPOINT OURSELVES. ISN’T THAT RIGHT DELIA AND OR ROBERT?
Nobody is clear on what this is now
some of them think it could be a gorilla performance piece and Trey starts filming me with his Iphone 6000 and something
I’M NOT YOUR ENEMY! I’M YOUR DEEP DARK TOMORROW MORNING!
Crickets have a way of sounding like revolution

I’m not sure about this place. I’m not sure about a city where pork is cheaper than chard. I’m not sure about boys in between home and school being stopped and carded and not given explanations and not being given whys. I’m not sure about some women sleeping under bridges and some women wearing jeans that cost five hundred dollars. I’m not sure about sending away the garbage we are too lazy to separate into recycling and compost. I’m not sure about cars. I’m not sure about unsafe bike lanes and people that don’t care about the people that choose to ride bikes. I’m not sure about dumping toxins into Lake Ontario. I’m sure that there’s a connection between the hormones in our dairy and the puffers in the backpacks of our young friends. I’m not sure about gender binaries and public bathrooms. I’m not sure about so many Starbucks.

“It’s right here” by Sasha at the Fringe Creation Lab

1:06pm
an Avision Young ad on a building

I’m gonna paint you a picture of the time you blew my mind
the time you sank my battleship
the time you showed me that there is redemption
and it wears a backwards baseball cap
The picture looks like
You
arriving with indignation
and bad breath
after
being swaddled and rocked
after sucking and biting me dry
shaking your head at the sound of the piano your father’s fingers play
making a stink about the colour of the music
I’m gonna paint you a picture
of what you said

You are the revolution

You are the clock
counting backwards
counting portrait and landscape
counting by letter
painting by number

I look at your chestnut eyes
And I can’t believe I made you

“Join the journey” by Sasha at her desk

5 minutes
the back of the Breton box

Before we became freedom fighters
Before we joined the revolution
We thought we were better than everybody else.
Not overtly
Secretly
Quietly
We rolled our eyes at the ignorance and the frivolity.
But now that we’re freedom fighters
Trained and prepared
Now that we’re part of the revolution
We realize that
I realize that
We are tiny specks of dirt in this
We are small sparkles on the whole dress of this country
When were learning
At the camp in the hills of New York State
We laughed at how ironic it is
You from the suburbs of Chicago
Me the son of a neurologist
Us
Fighting the systems that our parents built
Brick by brick
Check by cheque
Dollar by dollar
