“I’ll probably do it while you’re sitting on the toilet” by Julia on the toilet

Who Says I’m Not a Romantic
Fernando Raguero

We bought new toilet paper and you used the last bit of the roll but forgot to change it and we bought new toilet paper so it would have been easy. It would have been satisfying or maybe you’re not me. It is satisfying to change the roll, out with the old, in with the new. It’s a fresh start. A roll that hasn’t yet gotten dusty or humid or damp. A roll that suggests a readiness for all. And maybe you’re not me. And I can’t expect you to wait for me to have dinner even though you invited me to have dinner. You might have meant dinner on a different night like tomorrow or Easter Sunday. I can’t expect you to buy a new garbage can if the old one is busted even if you said you’d pick it up after work. You might have meant you were going to pick up the garbage can and see if it was heavy. You might have meant pick it up and put it back down again.

Some things add up really nicely.

Some things make sense to me but not to you, maybe, because you are not me.

“a forest lake frozen to the bottom” by Julia in Phong Nha-ke national park

It reminds me of the time we tried to take our leftovers home and the waitstaff who couldn’t understand our English very well didn’t know what a container meant. And so they gave it to us in a giant ceramic bowl that wouldn’t fit in our tiny fridge. They must have thought we were out of our minds. We brought the bowl to our room and some smaller bowls to eat from but we were too full to keep eating that night so we put them in the tiny fridge. The next day the giant bowl was gone but our two smaller bowls were still in there. We didn’t want leftovers until later and by the time it was later, we couldn’t eat them anyway. When we went to stick a spoon in, the top was hard as rock. It took a moment to figure out that it had frozen over-we put it in the wrong spot. This made us laugh for a while. Thinking of them coming to collect our giant bowl and saying, well I guess we’ll leave their ice noodles in the fridge then?

“Spiritual teachers” by Julia on her bed

I called my spiritual teacher, Helia, because I was in a state of emergency. I couldn’t find anything to wear and I couldn’t tell if it was my inner child reacting to my adult life, or if it was sign from the universe telling me I had to listen inward, or take a risk, or write down my dreams in the journal marked “For Dreams”. Helia was on vacation in the Okanagan. She had posted a photo from Peachland so I knew she was alive, but why wasn’t she responding to my very desperate attempts at contacting her? It’s not like this was a run of the mill anxiety attack or some realization that I cannot do this alone. I already know that I can’t, and that’s what I pay a spiritual healer for. Healia said to never hesitate to reach out. She failed to mention that I should just never be in crisis during the last weeks of July and first weeks of August. So I called my sister instead and she invited me over for homemade brownies and lemonade. She said she would try to massage my left shoulder knot out and maybe I just needed some TLC from someone who used to share a room with me.

“if something opens up” by Julia at her dining table

I’m waiting in line at the store
planning to buy this canned tuna
and a clue
because I got hungry
just
waiting and looking at the food
Seron said he was going to meet me here
I don’t think he’s coming
he said he would come to the broccoli aisle
but no one has showed up yet
that looks like it could be Seron
Based on his picture he will have a big black beard
and he said
for fun
he would be carrying
a daisy
in some way
I liked that he was trying to be creative
for me
because I told him before
I like making art and starting conversations
I wonder if we are at the same store
if he meant, maybe, a different one
or if I got the address wrong
I have been waiting for two hours
now
and counting
I wonder how long he has
been waiting
for me

“Never say never, Moby!” by Julia on her couch

Overheard on the subway going west

yeah i guess he was talking to me, referring to me, inviting me. i guess you could say he was reaching out or something. anyway, not important. he had his mouth facing my general ear direction, like you know? talking? and then suddenly i just sort of flashed back from out of my body and into his and i could like, read his MIND. his MIND! that’s so wild, right? but like, the worst part was, it was as if i was lucid dreaming and i could control everything, except i was in a jail cell and there was like, nothing to do anyway. does that make sense? i was trapped in my own lucid dream! and i wanted to get out, believe me, but i felt bad for the guy. it felt like there had been no one inside his mind for years. just sad, you know? he wanted me to go with him to the promised land. he said that in maybe fewer words? but the sentiment was there. he was severely connecting with me and i was obviously doing the same because i wanted to know what he wanted from me and to make sure he wasn’t just some creepazoid tricking me into getting captured or something. he never once said my name, so i guess i might be speculating here after all. but i could feel him trying to break through to me. i pulled out my earphones and i stared at him, like, okay go, i’m listening just do it now before i change my mind. like all of it was happening in split second intervals. and he just said it to me then. he said, never say never, Moby!
