When I first met Jer, he wasn’t in the place he is now. He was still drinking, I guess that was a big part of it. He was a fixer for others, I guess, but not really, and certainly not for himself. It wasn’t until he was able to show up and sort out the stuff inside of him that needed fixing, no… healing, that he was really able to start helping other people… the people around him that he loved and saw him through.

I’ll call my Aunt Maureen when I need my taps to stop dripping, thank you very much. I don’t need to call some plumbing “aficionado” as you like to do. My aunt Maureen, she’s a self-made woman! She didn’t have to go to plumbing school to learn about the world in a different way than she was used to. Her man was a no-good and he left, or she kicked him out, and she taught herself how to fix leaky faucets, leaky pipes, floor boards, and window cracks. It’s amazing. She doesn’t need anybody but herself and some tools and a can do attitude. So that’s who I want in my bathroom if push ever comes to shove! At least I know my aunt Maureen would take her shoes off before she tracks mud through my entire house! And when she’s done maybe the two of us can sit down over a spiked ice tea and talk about the real stuff.

I have so many goals. I write them down. I check things off. I make extra boxes for things. I put obvious list items down. I do this so I can check them off. “Watch Porn” is not a goal. But it gets a check mark a lot easier than “Get Life Together”. Then it tricks my brain. There’s a bunch of checks. Hey! I must know how to accomplish some things! Like when you put a fiver in your tip jar. But it’s your money. It just helps indicate that tips are welcome. And people follow it. People need to see guidelines. And then they comply. So that’s my list. That’s my everything really. Just one day at a time. “Get Over You And Your Good-Looking Haircut” is a tough one that doesn’t ever seem to get a check. It gets a lot of attempts at that. It gets half strokes. It gets erased lines. It’s not the easiest thing to achieve. But it’s my skinny jeans purchased before I’m the size I need to be to fit in them. Like a big overarching goal. And one that motivates change. “Wake Up” gets a check mark every single day though. Now that’s consistency. And success.
