Nothing But Money
Greg B. Smith

She never had a record until she did and couldn’t say that anymore. She didn’t say it enough, in fact, when she could freely and honestly do it. Now she has to announce that it’s no longer clean, pristine, untouched. She has to tell potential employers that she isn’t legally allowed to drive until 2017 because of a current DUI charge. She’d like to tell them that it wasn’t really her fault in the first place, but people don’t hear excuses when all they can see is “criminal record”. Criminal. That’s what she had become. And again, she wished she would have started more conversations with “I’m not a criminal” because now she isn’t able to identify with anything else. She hugged the woman she got to chatting with in the line at the post office who said to “try to stop identifying yourself with things in this world. Things are not you. And you are not things. Your failures do not define you. Your successes, though we’d like them to, don’t either.”

“party town ballon time!” by Sasha in the bath

From a text from Bec

Hey babe,
How’s it going? How was Jenny’s birthday? Party town balloon time?! I wish I could’ve been there. I miss you sooooooooo much. Like, you don’t even know. It sucks being here. My Dad is cool and my Mom is trying her best not to be a bitch but my brother? Oh my god. I honestly think that he’s an undiagnosed sociopath. Like, fully. He’s collecting dead bugs and archiving them on his wall. The wall of his room. My Mom says, “Leave him be…” as though there’s nothing weird going on at all. And he is totally obsessed with video games. He has a TV in his room now and sometimes he doesn’t even come out for meals. Mom leaves food outside his door like he’s in prison. It’s so weird. If I didn’t have Denny’s I would shoot myself in the head. But, I’m saving money, so that’s good. I guess. Ever since that DUI my parents aren’t helping with tuition so… I have to do what I have to do. I don’t want to be a bum my whole life so I have to finish this stupid degree.

Unsafe Convictions

Haven’t you heard? There’s this new thing that keeps your phone locked unless it senses your fingertips so no one is able to read your private messages! Isn’t that cool? It’s expensive though, so it’s like a huge investment, but at least it works. I mean it should work. I mean, it hasn’t fully been tested yet. God is there anything worse than being hungry? Yeah having intruders read your messages and be able to hold that against you! There are protective measures we can be taking and I’m just saying it’s worth it to be prepared and to pay the money. I saw it on the news! Or I read it maybe in a magazine, I don’t remember now. I just know it’s accurate because my friend Marcus is incredibly tech-savvy and he said that if it worked it would make us millions. Hahaha! I mean the company. I mean whatever who cares what I mean I’m just excited. But like, do you think it’s a smart idea? It’s like having a breathalyzer built into your car so that you can only get into it if you breathe under the blood alcohol level. And it’s expensive, like 800 dollars just to install..and it’s for people with DUIs but you get the idea.
