While whittling cedar Dad tells me about when he and Grandpa used to go ice fishing and how they caught great big fish that fed them all winter long. Grandpa and Dad would gut the fish and my Dad’s fingers would almost freeze. Uncle Hank had a smoker so they’d smoke some of the fish. That’s my favourite. Grandma would put some of the fish into the deep freeze and then use it in stews and . Grandpa died before I was born, but Dad shows me photos of him, and teaches me the things that Grandpa taught him, like how to make a walking stick.
