Kendra feels marginally better with a gun in her purse. She’d never tell Malcolm, or he’d be trying to grab for it the first chance he got. In fact, she has to re-write rules that she didn’t know existed.

“Mummy’s bag is off limits. No touching, no grabbing, no looking. Got it?”

“But what about when I need five dollars for gum balls?”

“Nope. I’ll get the money out for you.”


“No arguing!”

Malcolm scowls but gets it. She knows. Dr. Simpson says that kids always know when a parent has experienced a trauma. “The air changes,” he says, in that hushed, gentle way all the psychiatrists speak.
